Kosmos Energy has today released its fourth quarter results of 2014, during which it commenced test-well drilling in occupied Western Sahara.

"The CB-1 well targeting the Al Khayr prospect offshore Western Sahara was spud on December 19, 2014. Operations are ongoing and we expect well results in early March", Kosmos announces in its Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2014 Results. The results will come at least a month and a half prior to the UN Security Council's next scheduled hearing on Western Sahara.

Kosmos Energy is the first company to start drilling for oil in the parts of Western Sahara that have been occupied by Morocco since 1975. In doing so, Kosmos Energy went against a 2002 UN Legal Opinion which clearly stated that any oil exploration or exploitation in Western Sahara would be in violation of international law if done in disregard of the wishes and the interests of the people of Western Sahara.

The Saharawi people have time and again spoken out against the drilling. Kosmos Energy chose to ignore their pleas, and has proceeded to drill in collaboration with the Moroccan government – the occupying regime in Western Sahara.

Kosmos Energy holds a 55% stake in the Cap Boujdour Offshore Block, located off the mid coast of Western Sahara. Scottish company Cairn Energy has a 20% participation share in the Block. The remaining 25% is held by Morocco’s state-owned oil company ONHYM.
