EU fisheries up for debate in Spanish Congress

The EU fisheries in Western Sahara is to be debated in the Spanish Congress today.

23 February 2010

The debate in the Spanish Congress on 23 February 2010 is a socalled "Proposición no de ley", and was presented by a parliamentary group in December last year.

It will be debated in a special committee in the congress for EU affairs.

The debate, curiously enough, takes place the same day as the Legal Opinion from the European Parliament is to be debated in the EU Parliament's Fisheries Committee for the first time.

The proposition in the debate is based on the Fish Elsewhere campaign's petition, and urges the Spanish government to "defend before the EU the illegality of the Moroccan government to negotiate over the exploitation of the occupied Western Sahara's natural resources".
