Saharawis celebrate EU court victory

Saharawi refugees celebrate today's victory of their people over the EU in the EU Court of Justice.

29 September 2021

Today, the people of Western Sahara achieved a landmark victory in the EU General Court in Luxembourg. The ruling cancelled both the EU's trade and fisheries agreement with Morocco in the occupied territory.

All Saharawi groups have protested the EU's approach of lumping their occupied homeland in with Morocco. The condemnations were used by the European Commission to mislead the EU institutions into thinking that there was a dialogue with the Saharawis, proving consent. Today, the EU Court concluded that it was clear that no consent had been obtained from the people of the territory, through their recognised representation, the Polisario Front.

Polisario, from its part, has today issued a press statement on the matter.

Western Sahara Resource Watch has received a video of Saharawi refugees celebrating the victory. The video can be downloaded here.
